The North Dakota University System Online (NDUSO) works with eleven institutional partners to provide whatever assistance helps them move their initiatives forward in serving the students of North Dakota and elsewhere. Most importantly, the collaborative spirit of the eleven institutions and their willingness to share whatever they are doing is central to the success of the distance education effort in the NDUS.
When created in 2001, the North Dakota University System Online was an entity unto itself, but operating within the confines of the North Dakota University System. With new leadership in 2007, websites outside of the official NDUS were closed and merged into the system site.
With that administrative decision, the focus of the NDUSO moved from a system focus within the NDUS to a collaborative relationship assisting distance education initiatives on the eleven campuses. Essentially, the NDUSO was assimilated into the NDUS and identified as a service function of the system office. Distance education was not perceived as mission critical, but rather as an auxiliary activity of the individual institutions and its residential delivery.
With the realignment, the NDUSO provided a focus for the eleven institutions ranging from copyright issues, online faculty and course development, and working with the adult learner. The NDUSO provided opportunities at the system level that were often beyond the resources of the individual institutions. The sharing of resources and learning opportunities for the eleven distance education directors was a valuable resource and service of the NDUSO.
Initiatives & Interests
The NDUSO has been able to position itself as a collaborative agent working with the eleven institutions. Rather than a directive, 'top down' agency, the NDUSO works with the institutional partners to provide whatever assistance helps them move their initiatives forward in serving the students of North Dakota and elsewhere.
